The Trail of Breadcrumbs

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

I was recently speaking to a high priestess who was a bit bereft. During her years of training, the intensity of the classes helped her keep focus. There were assignments, feedback, and work to be done. Now that the training was over, what next?

She compared herself to those around her, who all seemed to have a clear road of mystical work and service before them. She couldn’t help wondering, what do I do now?

I had to tell her, despite appearances to the contrary, we have all been left wondering “what’s next?” And while some of us never find anything, those on the path know it becomes a trail of breadcrumbs to follow. One thing leads to the next, and you might not see the pattern or preparation for years to come, and then only in hindsight. The twists and turns are what make ours a crooked path. But we truly have no other choice.

My friend Raven Grimassi would describe it in terms of the Well Worn path of tradition and the Hidden Path to be cut by the next generation. At a certain point, we all walk a less frequented hidden path, with variations of it suited to us uniquely until perhaps we make some maps and point out the trail to others.

On this path, we get clues as we are doing the work. We have to unravel one clue to get to the next one. The right book, conversation, or class comes along at the right time and transforms our process.

Things can come at us out of left field if we are open and willing. Strange gods might be willing to share with us, but if we have a calcified practice or belief system that won’t let them in, we lose the trail of breadcrumbs being laid out by our highest and deepest guidance within.

The path is punctuated with high points of mystical contact, and even some insight. We often have to process those moments, sitting with them, reflecting deeply, journaling, or talking about them with trusted peers and mentors. If we do this diligently, the long-term result is the continual evolutionary shaping of our consciousness and behavior. Much of the way can be repetitive meditation, rituals, and mindfulness. Every day cannot be an epiphany, but everyday lack of focus can cause you to miss potential epiphanies on the horizon. All the mundane skills of our craft—meditation, journaling, trance, simple ritual, and offerings—provide the structure to seek, experience, process, and continue onward on the path. We often have to return to basics to go deeper personally. And nothing is more basic than seeking once again, after you have “found,” returning to the eternal quest by hunting deeper in the woods for the next breadcrumb on the trail of the mysteries.

Temple Astrolog: You could be absolutely right…or wrong

The asteroid Pallas Athena has just moved into the sign of Capricorn. There she is helping us to have a strategic plan on how to move forward with our career, work, and how to reach success and fame. Pallas always has a plan, because she is very clever and when she strikes she rarely misses her point. When in Capricorn she can also assist us with protection, boundaries and how to say no to things that are not good for us.

Right now Pallas Athena makes a challenging aspect to Lilith Black Moon (what is difficult to see) and Chiron the Healer. That makes it hard to read the map correctly. You may be absolutely right…or wrong. If you have decisions to make, take your time and do your research. Don’t forget to also listen to your gut feelings. What information is it giving you, and how can you decode it? This transit is until the middle of February.

Dealing with ghosts and patterns from the past

Pallas Athena is meeting up with the south node (past lives, karma) in the sign of Capricorn. There she both activates the past and helps us heal old wounds. Don’t be surprised if you are visited by old ghosts from the past that suddenly show up. Here you might need to be as clever as Pallas Athena and take a look at what strategies you are using to change old patterns. If it did not work last time…then maybe you need to use another, more upgraded, strategy to be successful.

Even if the pattern repeats itself, you are not the same person as last time, and you do not need to take the same approach. We all have our battles in life, internal and external. There is no shame in asking for help when you need it. And this may be one of these times.

Pallas Athena is intelligent, brave, and has unique ways of looking at things. This means she can also solve issues and problems that have been going on for a long time. She is absolutely a great ally ready to assist you.

Pallas Athena is meeting the south node until the end of February. She is in Capricorn until the beginning of May, when she does a quick visit to Aquarius, only to return to Capricorn again in the beginning of June. She then stays in Capricorn until the beginning of December 2020.

A strange couple in the neighborhood

Lilith Black Moon has just entered the sign of Aries and there her expression is a bit odd. The sign of Aries is naturally straightforward, nothing held back and straight to the point, often blunt but honest. Lilith black moon is mysterious, dark, moves in the shadows, and is trying to teach us about things like seeing in the dark. These energies do not have the easiest marriage. But when they do unite they can blend the instinctual energy from both, become successful, and teach us about unusual things, out of the ordinary.

Lilith black moon is meeting up with Chiron (healing, shamanism, wounds, initiation) in Aries and together they create a strange couple in the neighborhood. Unusual things and manifestations can occur. Everything from healing crises and pains that the doctors can not find the reasons for, to strange visiting spirits of different kinds. Because the meeting point of Lillith Black Moon and Chiron is taking place in fiery Aries, there is a strong energy charge in what happens.

Watch out for dangerous games

These aspects create an exciting time for ghost hunters and paranormal investigators. For the rest of us, it is time to gear up and strengthen the wards against unwanted visitors and energies in all the worlds. As a parent it may also be wise to open the ears and eyes more, and pay extra attention to what the kids and youngsters are doing and talking about. With these energies strange “daring games” can surface. What first seems to be a thrilling experience may take a twisted turn to something harmful and dangerous. Crazy and harmful things on internet and social media can also flourish.

Chiron is seeking healing in an intense (Aries) way, and that is all good. But with the company of Lilith Black Moon the healing road may take very different turns and expressions. As witches, parents, and healers we do well to keep all of our senses open to detect what is going on and who is in need of immediate healing and assistance.

Lillith Black Moon and Chiron will be travelling together until the later parts of June.

Harmonics of the Universe – extra happiness on Imbolc

We can now tune in to the harmonics of the Universe as we have a wonderful meeting with Venus (love, art, music) and Neptune at 16 degrees (intuition, healing, art) in the artistic sign of Pisces. They also make a harmonious aspect to Vesta at 14 degrees in Taurus and the fixed star Sirius at 14 degrees in Cancer. So get out there and do some star-gazing, listen to the heavens, take out your paint brushes and be creative! If you are an artist, musician or author don’t forget your note pad, tablet, camera or whatever you are using. Catch the gifts from heaven that are on the move right now. This also can give extra happiness for Imbolc celebrations this year, something that we all can need after very intensive astrological transits in the Fall and Winter.

This transit is until around the 4th of February when Venus moves away on her journey into Aries around the 7th of February.

Blessings!

The Holy Grail of Nuance

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

I am on a quest for the Holy Grail of nuance in a wasteland of hyperbole and bravado. I seek a holy cup bejeweled with sensitivity and sharing, and I find a cup filled with salt and fire.

No, I am not talking about a deep and powerful pathworking through otherworlds, but my experience on social media this week. I have become That Guy, the one who argues with people, even though I have mostly avoided that behavior over the years, so much so that when arguments happen on my pages, or on pages I help manage, I’m often stunned. Sometimes I reflect deeply and sadly for a time; sometimes I react.

The current situation started in a community forum with a pretty meme with the following written on it:

Not all Witches are Wiccan, Nor do they follow a rede.
Not all Witches believe in the Law of Return, Many hex and heal.
Not all Witches follow the Moon or the seasons; Witch is NOT synonymous with Pagan.
Not all Witches are women, and the men folk are not warlocks.
Some Witches are Satanic, this is a fact.
There are no rules in Witchcraft, anyone who tells you differently is ill-informed.
If you think you can put us all in one box, then you are gravely mistaken.
And if this offends your sensibilities; witch, please—deal with it.

Following the instructions at the end, I dealt with it first by simply ignoring it for a week or so, until a wonderful community member essentially said, “I mustn’t be a Witch then, because I do all those things!” Generally I don’t post contrary comments on other people’s pages if I don’t have a relationship with that person. I’m more likely to private message and say, “What’s up with that? Can you explain to me a little bit about what you meant by that, or why you posted it?” But in this case, I felt the need to address our community member who commented. My edited response:

I don’t think it’s a particularly good meme. I think a lot of things today on social media are very reactionary, and it’s hard to address a topic with nuance or complexity in a social media graphic. Many people don’t want to be pigeonholed, and I think that is great, but I’d be far more interested in what a Witch is (especially if that perspective is different than the major factors most think of in terms of Witchcraft) than what a Witch isn’t.

Not all Witches are Wiccan, that is true. And not everyone agrees on what the definition of Wicca is. British Traditional Wicca? Many BTW folk refer to themselves as British Traditional Witchcraft. Solitary Wicca? Eclectic Wicca? Many BTW folks wouldn’t consider those Wicca.

While not everyone uses the phrase Law of Return, most who are involved in metaphysics understand basic Cause and Response principles. Many non-Wiccan Traditional Witches call it “Paying the Coin.”

Many who follow the Rede will still hex, for a Rede is simply good advice, but another good piece of advice is “A Witch will not suffer an injustice.” Some call a justice spell a hex and vice versa. Usually the more personal it is, the less it is justice and is instead a response/reaction to someone mirroring something we don’t like about ourselves. When you heal someone from cancer, you are hexing the cancer.

While there is no requirement to “follow” the Moon, the Moon influences the astral tides, so if your Witchcraft includes magick or psychism, the Moon is following you, even if you are not following it. Likewise with the seasons. You don’t have to care about them, just as you don’t have to personally care about gravity, but gravity is there influencing you nonetheless. It’s not optional.

In theological terminology there traditionally has been the idea that Pagan is the larger term, like Christian, and Witch and Wiccan are both specific terms within the greater whole. In years past, one could easily say that not all Pagans are Witches, but all Witches are Pagans, meaning of the land and/or old pre-Christian religions, meaning anything from the Pagan Romantic Revival in literature and art to the more modern Neopagan revival. Kind of like Pagan is to Witch like Christian is to Catholic. And different sects of Witchcraft—Gardnerian, Alexandrian, and even Temple of Witchcraft—are like different orders in the Catholic Church (Franciscan, Dominican, et cetera). Non-Witch Pagan traditions would be like Protestantism, with all its various groups and complexities.

Today there is a large group of Witches not wanting to identify with the word “Pagan” based on the current Pagan culture and behaviors, feeling they have more in common with mystical traditions of other persuasions. I can’t swear to it, but I think we’d find the modern roots to this idea in Robert Cochrane and as Trad Craft grows, so does that idea. Trad Craft often has heretical Christian elements to it, so folks can feel they have more in common with Christians than what is considered Pagan today. I highly disagree, but I see their point and often empathize with it. I’ve landed myself in a place of love of those who practice whatever form of Paganism they call upon, and just like the word “Wicca,” I don’t shy away from it, but I also need a deeper conversation about those words if you want to walk away without assumptions. Today it’s easy to declare yourself a Witch on Twitter or Facebook, but back in the day, you had to gingerly broach the topic. You understood that you could lose your job, your children, and your family by being too open, or even have a brick through your window. This concern was not so far away for me and those who taught me. And if you look around, I think it is still closer than you might think.

Many male Witches, like Storm Faerywolf, use the term “warlock.” In an age where we emphasize self-identification on so many other levels, like orientation and gender, we should be open to people identifying with this word if they so choose. (I had a hard time with that, but after a talk with Storm, I’m on-board even if it’s not my word.)

Some Satanists identify as Witches, but are they Church of Satan, Satanic Temple, or even Temple of Set? Each of those groups looks at things very differently. I find few Witches I know identify as Satanic so much as Luciferian, and a good argument could be made that a Luciferian Witch is not a Satanic Witch. In strict interpretations, Satan is not an angel who fell, and is not equated with Lucifer. Some would say the Temple is Luciferian on some level, or at least Promethean, but we are not Satanic, nor is it a part of our ethos. Light-bearing, however, is.

There are no rules beyond what is effective, and what is effective for you might not be effective for me. We might even have different measures of what constitutes effective. Yet there are some underlying principles, patterns, aesthetics, and experiences that I have found cut across Witchcraft in many forms. I’ve been blessed to meet a lot of Old World and secretive Witches, New World and open Witches, dark and light and everything in between in terms of aesthetic, but I’ve found if it’s really Witchcraft, there is something in the Witch Soul that recognizes each other. There are things that flow through the spirit of Witchcraft itself that connect and interweave in all its forms. Some like to claim the word, but often disregard and disrespect what has come before them—I think that too can be part of the path of the Witch. Maybe they will find resonance, and maybe they will not. I think Witchcraft itself is like an orientation to the world, and we go through many “coming out” and self-discovery processes. This meme can embody one, but it’s not the only one, just as how you looked, what you said and did and thought when you were twenty at, say, LGBTQIA Pride (if you are queer) are very different than when you are thirty and more immersed in the experience, life, and community, and are again different at fifty. Witch is a process that does not end.

If you think otherwise, you are not gravely mistaken or ill informed, you’re simply in a different place and having a different experience. And that’s okay too.

From that I was struck by the line:

“Witch is a process that does not end.”

Rarely do I write something and go, “Huh. Where did that come from? I should remember that.” I posted my comment and got an immediate response on my personal Facebook Page from a reader who has been practicing since the 1960s. This person stated that Wiccans are not Witches, that they are encased in dogma and have no room for spiritual growth.

There was the assumption that I agreed with him. I didn’t. I felt his response was potentially insulting to those who identify as Wiccan, and just seemed contrary to my experience. I have a problem when people are insulting on my page, even if they think they are simply being honest. While I don’t shy away from the word “Wiccan,” it’s not my favorite descriptive, so I didn’t feel offended for myself, but I want places where I post to be welcoming.

This comment was also derogatory to those who identify with religion, implying there is no room for growth in any recognized religion. As someone who learned from my teachers, particularly through the work and life of Laurie Cabot, that Witchcraft is a science, art, and religion, simultaneously, and considering my own struggle to reclaim the word “religion” from dogmatic institutions for community and legal reasons, I felt the need to speak up.

I responded by suggesting that he meet more Wiccans and Witches as many Wiccans I know are deeply involved in the mystery, and while traditional, are not dogmatic. I also explained that I’ve met some people who identify as Witches with very little tradition, but who nonetheless come across as completely dogmatic. The new voices of Traditional Wicca are wonderful, and folks like Jason Mankey and Thorn Mooney are doing wonderful things in community, and as Wiccans, are not dogmatic in their writing, teaching, or experiences.

I outlined my own work in a recognized religious order, assuming if someone was commenting like this, then they didn’t know my background. Our understanding of the world “religion” is ever-changing, but I always go back to the root of “linking” and look at it much like the root of the word “yoga.” I responded that there is a mystical side to many of the mainstream religions, and those mystics are growing and learning on their path as we are.

As you can imagine, the discussion devolved a bit, listing credentials, history, and accusations of being coy or passive-aggressive, but before it got too much, I asked for us to disconnect. Perhaps that was too aggressive, but if a more gentle boundary holding was considered passive-aggressive, I figured a request to stop was unambiguous. Yet there was still more contact after the request. There were obviously bad feelings there about those who identified as Wiccans, and while I’m not doubting the personal experience, I was expressing a boundary that this was not the place to lecture about it. When discourse reaches a place where someone being combative apologizes that their “honesty” is offensive, they embody the passive-aggressiveness they were previously complaining about, and there is not a lot that can be done. I’ve learned this is one of the “cues” indicating that it is time to disengage online. Very little good can continue from this point onward.

There could have been understanding, however, if the response had been any of the following:

  • What do you think I’d learn from meeting more?
  • What have your experiences been?
  • How are we both defining Wicca?
  • May I share with you what happened to me?
  • I thought we both agreed. Can you explain to me how we are disagreeing?

There could have been healing around the feelings and situation. It was so odd to have someone advocating less dogma and more free experience become so locked down into their own opinion, rejecting the greater inquiry that would yield a new experience or understanding.

In retrospect, perhaps I should have asked him questions, though my first impulse when someone comes into my space and starts being insulting is to get them out of my space. When I see such language, I imagine if someone replaced the word “Wiccan” with any other group. If you placed Jews, blacks, queers, or immigrants in this situation, would it be acceptable? I realize one’s religion/spiritual practice is considered to be a choice, and the others are not, but one could easily hold such a truth as their personal experience and likewise not be open to any other. But perhaps I lost an opportunity for greater understanding on my part there.

There was also a complaint that I was trying to validate my “wrong” opinion on my page by coming onto my page and reacting when it was clear I was not in agreement. He said I had “joined the ranks of old school pagans” and complained about Wiccan hypocrisies. Ironically the meme that generated the post he was commenting on went out of its way to disassociate Witch from not only Pagan, but also Wicca. My combative commenter and the original creator of the meme are in process, for Witch is a process that does not end. I’m in process. You are in process. They are in process. Witches, Wiccans, Pagans, and People are all in process. Even when we think otherwise. It’s all good.

My commentator ended on a civil, perhaps even positive note between us, and for that I am thankful. I’m sure he has a totally different experience of the exchange, just as the meme creator probably has a totally different experience of their meme, and most likely got lots of validation and re-shares by those who wholeheartedly agree.

So does it really matter? In the long run, no. Yet for me it illustrates the need for nuance, question, and a deeper form of communication that is often neglected in online communication. Fun memes that are what the kids today call “salty” can also be hurtful. We often post without thinking, simply to express ourselves, and don’t always realize who is listening and watching. Online, the mode to empower the self is often to pick on the other, to disassociate and distinguish yourself from what you are not. I am much more interested in hearing what you are and why than implications or insinuations that one is better or worse than another. You are welcome to dislike, discard, or find another practice more useful, but when you complain simply just to rail against it, you are not deepening the conversation or education.

When communicating, you have a duty to communicate clearly. It’s easy to use a meme that absolves you of responsibility by arguing that you can’t be held responsible for people committed to misunderstanding you. We had a teacher in our school whose constant refrain was to say, “It’s not my fault if people don’t understand me” and then shrug her shoulders. When 1-in-10 misunderstand you, it’s them. When 5 out of 10 misunderstand, it could be you and perhaps you should commit to clearer communication skills before speaking publicly. That teacher is no longer with us as she could not do that.

I’ve been blessed to have mentors who had their start in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, who not only have helped me see things from their generational perspective, but have also asked me about mine, and about what has come after me. Some are Wiccan initiates in several traditions, and they are open and honest folk deeply committed to the mysteries. I wish my commentator and meme creator could have met them. I have wonderful friends and students in younger generations who will take time to explain their perspective to me. Sometimes we all get together! We often all disagree, but we are talking, sharing, learning, and experiencing things from a new point of view. I don’t think there is any Witch I agree with 100%, even my favorite authors and friends, and don’t want anyone to agree with me 100%, though we have an underlying ethos of the Witch Soul that connects us.

Along with our lists of “12 Things All Witches Do” or “7 Things Never to Do in Witchcraft,” we must not absolve ourselves of thinking more deeply or behaving better simply because an internet meme sympathized with our plight and gave us permission to be sassy, bitchy, and tell off those who otherwise hold us responsible.

So I continue to seek that holy grail of nuance, bejeweled with sensitivity and sharing, so I can better embody it as much as receive from it. Though I have a sneaking suspicion I’m more likely to find it when looking into your eyes and hearing your voice than between the keystrokes, where it will keep hidden like the roebuck in the thicket.

Go outside. Talk to people. Ask questions. Seek the Grail.

Temple Astrolog: Numerology for 2020: Finding Balance in the Universe

The Way of the Heart

The numerological vibration of 2020 is 4 (20+20=40, 4+0=4). Number 4 is related to the heart chakra and the color green. As humans we need a lot of green to be well and balanced. Research has showed that people on the verge of being burned out avoid the colour green. It is an antidote against stress and has the power to lower both stress and blood pressure. Green is also connected to time and space.

People with a strong connection to green have a natural feeling of time and natural cycles. The green is putting out the message “this is my space, and that is your space” that is one of the reasons why it is such a great color to have in a waiting or therapy room. The number 4 is a physical builder. People born under its influence are good at working with their hands and many of them are also excellent massage therapists.

Strong forest scents and essential oils like pine, fir, and eucalyptus have for many years been used for killing bacteria and parasites and on a spiritual level. The color green can do the same thing and work antiseptically. Green keeps your space clean and clear and can work as a guardian during your sleep. Having green in your bedroom or having green linens can be useful if you are spirit-traveling during the night and want to avoid brining back home heavy energy or spiritual “nasties”.

The four is connected to the four elements and the four directions. It is teaching us about the way and the path of the heart. How to live in balance with an open heart. Therefore one of the challenges this year will be how to listen to the heart. Your heart does not necessarily say the same thing as someone else’s heart. Your path may differ from others and be unique for you.

I’ve been working with colour therapy for many years and I can see over and over again that when people are returning back to themselves they choose green. It can be after a divorce, recovering from an illness, or getting back to their path in life.

This being a green year has the potential to bring us back home on a collective plane. Back to the heart and back to living a balanced life. But we must also remember that the first step is to recognize and accept being lost and off track, before finding the direction back home to the heart. And that may be a challenging wake up call. Here it is also important not to put blame on oneself or another for being lost, but rather find joy in being back on track again, and also honoring the experiences made while being more in the bush and taking an alternative route.

The number 4 corresponds to the Tarot card “The Emperor.” When he is balanced, he is a wonderful leader. When out of balance, he has closed his heart and has the “my way or the highway” attitude. If he connects with his heart the roads open up and he is able to lead with both a lot of love and great success.

The Number 0 and Divine Support

As soon as we find the number 0 in numerology we know there is something special going on, and we must have divine interventions in our calculation. Zero is spirit, it is nothing and everything at the same time. If we look at this year and read the numbers from right to left, we see that the 4 is created from the number 40. It’s a big difference from a 4 created through a number like 13/4 (1+3=4) that makes the journey through death and transformation. Number 40 has the support and intervention of Spirit made physical (4 physical builder).

People born under the influence of 40/4 have a lot of luck in their life and everything seems to fall into the right place at the right time. They are also charming, intelligent and have good looks as well. These are the people who have never been long on a waiting list for an apartment, never been out of work and seem to never have any problem finding a new partner if they want to. Things kind of manifest for them when they need it. So what could be their challenge in life, we might wonder?

At my clinic I’ve listened to some of the most exiting life stories from people born under the influence of 40/4. But they have also been part of the category talking about major life regrets as well. How does that add up? To find the answer to that we must go back to four being the number of the heart. The heart is all about being true to yourself.

To hear the voice of your heart can be a challenge, especially when life is moving fast. One 40/4 client told me about these amazing men she had met during her life. She had experienced a lot of love and passion. But she had let her greatest love let slip through her fingers. She thought that she had time, and what if someone better was to show up?

Another client talked about amazing jobs that had taken him all over the world, but the work team that he loved the most and the job that was nurturing his soul, he had left many years ago. Neither of these people had any difficulties manifesting relationships or opportunities, but were they the right ones for the heart in the long run?

Using your time in a wise way

With the number 40/4 we have manifestation (4) and spirit (0): Boom! Spirit straight down to the physical plane. This is a great gift. But we should take the time to stop, reflect, and make contact with our hearts more than usual and ask our selves how this feels in the heart. Am I manifesting things aligned with what is true and good for me in the long run?

We should also make sure that we take good care of the things and the people that matter the most to us. We cannot buy more time. Stop, take your time, and listen. Being present in the moment is one of the most important messages this year. 40/4 is connected to the Tarot card the Page of Cups. This card has a lot of pure heart energy connected to it. Finding true love, whether it is a person, a job that you love, or the perfect place to live.

Creation looking at itself

In this year 2020 we have double digits 20+20. When we see a number repeating itself like 11, 22, 33, and so on they are called a master number. A number and energy that is extra challenging but also extra rewarding. One of the keys to understand the master number is that the energy is looking at itself. This creates insights but the road to getting there is through a lot of shadow work, looking at oneself.

The number 20 represents the letter T in the alphabet. A symbol of a bar on top of a stick in the ground. On this bar we can sit like a bird looking down on our life, doing measurements and evaluating what has been good and not so good. The number 20 is related to the Tarot card “The Æon” or sometimes “Judgement” or “The Resurrection.” So here we have the Æon, or creation if we’d like to call it that, looking and mirroring itself.

In terms of science, mathematics, medicine, and so on this is great for discoveries and breakthroughs. We can expect to learn a lot of new things this year. We may not know how to apply it yet but it’s a great beginning. On a more mundane plane this is an energy that involves a lot of self-reflection an revaluating one’s life.

Regression, past lives and bringing soul pieces back

We have a lot of keys opening up the timeline. The color green can be very helpful working through past lives and past fears, especially if you died in a bad or dramatic way. Together with the 0 being present in 20+20=40 we can expect more spontaneous memories from both childhood and past lives. People working in fields of regression and past-life therapy may have a lot of work as well as those working with shamanic soul retrieval. On a collective level we may all start to remember more of who we are as a human species and why we came into being. We can also expect new research in fields like archaeology and history that may be very surprising and may create a need to revaluate the history of humanity in some way.

So let’s put the puzzle together. We have 2020, 20+20= 40, 4+0=4. The Æon of time looking at itself, going through some intense shadow work, becoming the Page of Cups with a pure heart searching for true love, finally manifesting as the Emperor, who has the power of becoming a great leader if he connects with his heart, leading the way to a great future.

With this I wish you a wonderful year!

Blessings!

The Gift of Healing: Reiki and the Witch

by Dawn Marie Costorf

There are many things that witches do but, most of us, don’t do everything.  Some witches really like crystals and others don’t. Some like reading historical texts and some want to just experience ritual. Some witches only practice solitary and others want to find community. You get the idea. The one thing that I would read often is that witches are healers. This was one thing that I did not necessarily believe. Some witches are definitely healers but all? I believe that witches have the power to change energies and to change situations in their favor but the idea of being a “healer” escaped me. It wasn’t until I started studying at the Temple Mystery School that I understood the power of healing itself.

There will be people that say they are sending you energy and you might be able to feel it or not.  Energy—healing or otherwise—is unfocused. There are many ways to get it focused, and witches work to do this on a regular basis. You can assign energy a color or an emotion, almost like giving red roses to someone you love. In giving that gift you are giving red energy, love or passion or even motivation to a person who needs it, who has asked for it. The usual way I’ve sent energy is in circle spaces—releasing the energy of the circle to go and make changes in the world. Small, focused energy designed to heal does not need a big circle in order to make it happen—you just need a little bit of concentration.  Reiki is a great way to do this.

I had heard of Reiki before and I have received Reiki but it always seemed to me unattainable, mysterious and just for that exclusive group of Reiki practitioners.  At the time, twenty years ago, it was expensive and hard to find a class (called attunements). I had many other expenses and precious little time. But there was something about it…Something that said to me that I should look into it.

Many years later, as I was in Witchcraft III in the Temple and working a lot with my shadow I had many revelations. One was that I realized how tired my soul was and how the old ways of doing things aren’t going to work for me anymore.  I needed to raise myself up and change my energy. So I went to find a Reiki master and I asked her if she could give me an attunement. She in turn created a class and filled the room with people! We spent the first half of the day learning and getting attuned to Reiki 1 energies and after lunch we received Reiki 2.

My experience was profound.  I could feel a line of Reiki Masters supporting me and Reiki lifting me.  After that I could understand why people liked Reiki so much. The next step was trying to find a place to practice Reiki – which is how the Reiki shares at the Temple of Witchcraft got started…I asked Renee what she thought and we in turn asked Adam.

Reiki is an experience of love and trust. Love is the healing energy—you want to heal because you want to help, to stop people from hurting.  I believe that this is because you recognize them as you – as human. Trust is letting the Reiki work.  Reiki is an intelligent energy that will go where it’s needed. You can’t really force it to go in the direction you want.  What I mean by that is if you are working with someone and you are sending Reiki to their injured foot, the Reiki may go to the knees or hips.  Reiki looks for where the healing needs to go and then you facilitate that healing.

Reiki has brought me a gift that I never thought I would have. The gift of healing for myself and a way to send focused healing to others. Reiki is relaxing, fun, and definitely raises your vibration. If you are interested in getting attuned to Reiki energies feel free to reach out to the Virgo Ministry or send an email to [email protected] and we can get you in touch with those we know that are doing attunements and then you can join us at the Monthly Temple Reiki Share!

Skills In and Out of the Craft

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

We talk about Witchcraft as an art and a science, as the craft of the wise, and relate our mysteries to the skills of an earlier time—the farmer, the blacksmith, the miller, the horseman, the cunning folk, the forest priestess, and the bard. All of these things still exist, but are often overshadowed by the modern world. All of these things, like Witchcraft itself, require a level of skill. You must apply knowledge in practical and often artistic ways to express your skill. All of these crafts are an art unto themselves, just as is magick, and just as are our lives.

For we are each the artist of our own life. Our emotions, thoughts, actions, inactions, words, and relationships form the patterns of our greatest work, the masterpiece of our life. For some, it is an expression of Will, their True Will in the world as the Great Work. The world was one way when they came into it, and through their Will, actions, and intent, the world will be shaped differently in some definite, if often subtle, way. We all leave the world different from how we found it, but for many a magician, this is the lens of their art.

For others, it is an expression of Love, their Perfect Love, that conveys their art. The Great Work is not about doing, but about being. How do you be in the midst of change? How do you respond to the world, to those around you? How do you stay heart-centered? They still act, but their actions come from the place of the heart, and that is the lens of their art.

There is a third path for those who know that neither path is complete by itself. The Great Work requires both Will and Love, and in these they find Wisdom, which is also true. Wisdom allows them to know when to express the proper balance of Love and Will.

So when we look at these options, are we being skillful in our magickal expression in the world?

A very good Buddhist friend always drives home the point that it’s not about being right or wrong, but how skillful our expression of something is. As we work our magick to shape our world, and as we work our magick to respond rather than react, how can we be more skillful in our work? That is where the art is found.

Intensity and passion can serve us—and serve us well—at certain times. They can be the most skillful choices in our palette of the human life, but only in the proper context. Other times a more reserved hue from the palette can get us the result we want. Knowing the difference, particularly if we are looking to create magickal change in the world through our actions or our heart, is important.

I remember a friend in college, an avid environmentalist, very passionate and very angry. In the days before things like recycling were common, we were talking in his kitchen, and I mistakenly said recycle when the proper term was reuse. I got a ten-minute speech on the value of reuse versus recycling and how recycling wasn’t the answer. And he was absolutely correct. But his means of delivery made my twenty-year-old self not want to either recycle or reuse and instead tell him to fuck off. He could have used that moment to educate, but in the end, it was more about expressing his anger over the situation than educating someone to a new, more helpful behavior. While I understand his point in light of the environmental crisis, I think he walked away thinking he’d made me a passionate reuse/recycler, but all he did was alienate me.

I understand the argument that it is not his job to sugarcoat anything for me, and that any offense taken by me is mine and not his, but the result he wanted was not the result he got, and I’m not sure if he was even aware. Granted, he was a dabbler in metaphysics and not seeking to master consciousness, but I know as someone on the path, there have been times I’ve done the same exact thing, and I want to be more skillful in my approach as I go forward. It might not be my responsibility to modify myself, but if I want change in such a situation, then in many ways, I must take that option.

Much later, after observing his purchasing habits and his fervent anger towards corporations, I grew to better understand him and the passion served in that moment. Because I could experience it without feeling assaulted by it, I had the space to formulate change in my consciousness.

Today is a time of great conflict. There is passionate disagreement on many issues, and I clearly have my own opinions. But I often think about how I, as a Witch, can facilitate the change I wish to see by setting space, moving energy, and choosing my words and actions carefully, like an artist, to achieve the result I want. We are making cooperative art, so I don’t have total control, but that’s the blessing and curse of it. How can I hold firm and express my passion, my outrage, yet do so in a way that conveys appropriate change? I don’t always know. I am not that skillful. But knowing that I lack skill helps me strive to be more aware of myself and my choices in every situation, beyond personal reactions, into the expression of culture and community for us all. All our actions contribute to the collective. Can I both make—and encourage others to make—more skillful, more beautiful, and more appropriate actions for the moment? I’m not saying pacifism is necessarily the way of my art, or anyone else’s. But there is time and place for yelling with a protest sign, and that is not the kitchen table. There is a time and place for the vehemence of the black candle calling for justice, and that is not over coffee.

This skill of the craft helps me navigate that. The boring occult lessons many people skip (all the visualizations and affirmations, the basic prayers and the meticulous setting up of the altar, sitting for hours before that damn white candle!) are life skills to find patience, harmony, and in the ritual itself, a sense of knowing when the drama is appropriate and when it is not. To know when you are in the lead, and when you are in a support role, and how that shifts in one session and over time.

I’ve had many conflicts in my life with family, friends, students, and others, and I try to be more skillful in each situation, learning from the last. Many have been resolved in love, or if not love, at least kindness. Some were not resolved, and I’m often pleasantly surprised when someone comes back to me years later to apologize. I feel as if I held the space as best I could, but couldn’t control the outcome. Sometimes I awaken to realize I was at a fault, and I go to apologize. Sometimes the apology is accepted and sometimes it’s not, or the apology remains unspoken as it would do more harm than good. And sometimes the situation is never resolved in this lifetime.

Each has given me an understanding of expressing my Will, for I am personally willful as well as seeking divine Will. Each has given me opportunities to love, and hold love, realizing unconditional love is not an unconditional relationship. Knowing the balance has granted some small measure of wisdom, and knowing how to express the balance has helped me become more skillful in the Craft of my life.

Spells for a Better World: Sator Square to Stop Wildfires

This morning I saw pictures of the wildfires in Australia and got inspired. This past year, I did a “spells for a better world blog” because I thought witches should be using their energy to solve problems throughout the world. Many spell books show us how to get what we want for ourselves and our family, but many fall short of showing us how to use magic to do something about world problems. So I saw a need and filled it. The blog last year was in-line with our Temple full moons here in New Hampshire. I was running the full moons with my friend and amazing High Priestess Matooka, we did these spells in conjunction with those rituals. I got some strong messages at the end of 2019 to return to doing my solitary full moons instead of serving community through the moon rituals. Matooka also received some messages about a different way moons would go this year. Since our visions seemed in line I thought I was done with the spells for a better world blog because it was connected to moons for me.

Then I saw the terrifying pictures and stories from Australia today, so I created a spell and posted about it online. In my minimalistic way, I described the spell, took a picture, and posted it to see if anyone else would be inspired to do the same spell. Almost instantaneously, I had people asking me to tell them more, to provide more information on how to do the spell, why it would work, what the heck a sator square was, and would I write a blog about it. Someone even said it would make a great spells for a better world blog!

As I said, I thought I was done with that blog. I had planned to turn my attention to working on other things this year. Maybe finish the three books Ive been sitting on, build up my hypnosis business, make some more online courses, Voices of the Temple podcasts, and keep up with all the other projects I have for the Temple, including some fundraising ideas. Apparently, however, at least this spell for a better world is still needed. I am going to have to sit with the idea and consider the possibility of others in the future.

So, without further ado, here is the spell:

Sator Square for Stoping Wildfires

This spell is inspired by Silver Ravenwolf’s Braucheri and granny magic course. The sator square is an arrangement of letters from ancient sources used for protection and for putting out fires. The first way I ever saw it used was to put the square on a plate and throw it in a fire to snuff it out. I have never used it for that, since that seems inefficient. What you need for this spell is a picture of where you would like wildfires to be put out, a marker for writing the sator square, a plate, a cup of ice, and the ability to chant.

Print out your picture and put it on the plate. Use the marker to write the Sator square on top of it. Here is is written out for you below:

Place your glass of ice on top of the picture on the plate. Visualize, imagine, or just think about fires going out in the area. Things cooling off, rain coming to the area, and things getting better. Begin to chant “Sator, Arepo, Tenet, Opera, Rotas” nine times. Release the magic up to do its work.

When the ice has melted, you can clean up the spell, releasing the water out into the world.

This spell can also easily be adapted to bring down fevers and douse similar “fires” as well.

Blessed be,

Temple Astrolog: Happy New Year!

We are still having a lot of placements in the sign of Capricorn: Mercury, Jupiter, the south node, Sun, Ceres, Saturn, and Pluto so the earth energies are intense right now.

Today the sun (illumination) is directly on the south node (karma) in Capricorn (karma and the past) at 8 degrees. Don’t be surprised if someone from your past shows up today or in the upcoming week. You may also have dreams about old times, or even past lives. Be aware of what comes your way on TV and through other medias as it may be a clue to your distant past and precious incarnations.

With so many placements in the sign of Capricorn it is easy to get stuck in the past and we do well to remember this New Year to look into the future. What do you want in the year to come? What do you wish to manifest?

Goddess Manifestation Altar

The asteroid Vesta (devotion, priest/priestess) is in the sign of Taurus. People with a strong Vesta in their charts are very devoted to their spirit and what they believe in. Now Vesta is in the sign of Taurus making a trine (positive aspect) to both Jupiter and the Sun in Capricorn. There she can really help us to manifest our hopes and dreams!

Vesta has another special talent, and that is to build altars. So why not build an altar at New Year’s Eve with symbols representing the things you want to manifest in the year 2020? If you want to work with an extra-strong energy you can invite your guests to bring symbols to the guest altar as well. A beautiful thing to do to help each other make your wishes come true!

If you want, you can also make a vision board of the things that you want to manifest. Making it into something physical and tangible is needed to get that extra help from Vesta and the element of earth.

Vesta in Taurus is keeping the contact with Jupiter for some while and will be joined by Pluto as well, so this manifestation assistance will be available for us until the middle of March when Vesta moves into the sign of Gemini.

The Party

With many placements in Capricorn it is easy to overdo things, and become stressed-out in the last minute. Look over your lists of what to do, and let go of anything excessive, you will thank me later. Time is also something Capricorn influences, both losing time and time passing slowly. If you are hosting a party, be sure to have things to do to keep the party going. Plan extra activities and games to play. Don’t forget the music and different things to drink, as it may help things flow a bit easier.

Swedish New Year Oracle

This is an oracle game that my great-grandmother Selma used to do for the whole family at New Year’s Eve. The oracle game is done late in the evening, either just before midnight or in the early hours after celebration the new year. Traditionally, the oldest person of the family gets to be the oracle.

The person being read walks into a room to meet the oracle alone. The setting is important and it should be done with respect and a touch of mystery. On a table in the room there are seven old-fashioned tea cups in a row turned upside down. Under each of them there is a symbol. The oracle moves the cups around for a while until the person being read to says stop. The cups are then put in a straight line again. The person being read points to which two cups he or she wants to open. The oracle shows what’s inside. The symbols tell what will happen to the person for the coming year.

Traditional symbols to put under the cups and their meanings:

  • Baby made of yarn or a small piece of cloth = new beginnings, baby, new start.
  • Ring = marriage, alliance, something over and over again.
  • Key = luck, open doors, Yes to a question.
  • House = your home, family.
  • Cross = hinders, obstacles to overcome, hardship, No to a question.
  • Coin = money, prosperity.
  • Bear made from yarn or a small piece of cloth = health, stamina, endurance

If you want, you can add more cups and symbols, but I don’t recommend using more than 13 and the number should always be uneven. If you want inspiration on what symbols to use, you can look at a traditional Lenormand deck.

With this I wish you a beautiful ending to 2019 and a really Happy New Year 2020!

Calling All Healers

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

“My grandma is in the hospital. Please send healing!”

After putting out such a call for healing, some people find my response annoying. For while I know there are a lot of ways of praying and sending good thoughts, I practice Witchcraft. So when I agree to “send healing,” I mean magick beyond simple well-wishing. That means I need some specific information:

  • What is her full name?
  • Where does she live?
  • How old is she? Or what is her birthdate?
  • Got a photo?

These are basic things to make a meaningful connection. Can the all-wise divine mind root out the subject of our well wish to Jane’s grandma? Probably, but it’s not the most effective method of operational Witchcraft. Jane might have two grandmas. If you practice psychic work, you’ve probably tapped into the wrong person at least once, and you can do the same with healing. Ideally, I’d like something the recipient has touched, which is why I keep items of friends and family to attune to them for meaningful healing magick. When a student of magick asks for healing but doesn’t offer that info, I often think they are not really asking for magick, so I don’t offer majick. If they do ask, the recipient goes onto an altar, gets a candle, has a working or perhaps their own shrine with a photo, healing crystals, and plant spirits.

Other important questions to consider:

  • Did they ask for healing?
  • Did you get permission?
  • Are they taking steps to heal?

While we have all asked others for help when in a panic about a loved one, it is good to know that they are open to it. If not, depending on the system you work in, either you are sending the healing and they are rejecting it or you are forcing it on them. There are ways to check in and see if they are open when you don’t have verbal confirmation, including practices such as Higher Self communication or dowsing. Some systems, like Reiki, have built-in fail safes, but most don’t. It’s hard to rally the troops of spirit allies for someone who doesn’t really want that kind of help. At best, you waste time and energy. At worst, you are messing with their fate pattern.

I don’t always involve myself in mass calls for healing. I often think depending on the systems involved and the ethos of the practitioners, the mass effect can be overwhelming or can create conflicting energies. Sometimes too much healing can be hurtful. I have a friend who reported a covenmate in a coma rose from it long enough to say the magick was too much and that it was killing her. She died soon after that. The healing was sent with the best of intentions, but on some level, it was not working.

In days past, you might ask a coven or lodge or group with a cohesive group mind to work the magick or coordinate a few small groups. But the idea of many individuals and groups working uncoordinated at the same time was unheard of. Experienced magicians will harness this new modern phenomenon by putting forth a channel to collect and guide mass healings for themselves or loved ones.

Sometimes I check in and get the message “while you want to help, this one is not for you.” When we have a lot of other magick in process, we can’t give it our 100%. We should let others do it, and when it is our turn, we will know.

There is also a difference between spells setting magick for the final outcome, spells continually sending healing energy, and evoking spirits to do the healing. When folks say I’ll light a candle during surgery, that is too late for me. I want the candle spell done for the healed outcome far before the surgery. The more time the spell has to work, the better, guiding you to the right surgeon, hospital, and day and time. Continual energy during a crisis can help if nothing else is being done, but I would rather be set up for success. Likewise when calling upon the spirits, I want to give them as much preparation time as possible. I believe in instantaneous and incredible results, but I prefer gentle synchronicities to get the result I want. Heroic cures often involve dangerous conditions.

So keep these things in mind when you put out the call for healing for yourself and others. Are you sure what you are asking? Have you given everything you need to make it happen? Is your request prepared and serious? If not, think more deeply about what support you need and want and consider the best way to get it.

Temple Astrolog: A Different Kind of Yule and Christmas

2019 has been a very special year with lots of personal and global transformation. As we move towards the ending of this year and the start of 2020 we are going to meet some equally special energies on our way.

The sun has just moved into the sign of Capricorn, a sign of earth, stability, endurance, and duty, to name a few things. The sun is not alone, it is keeping company with Jupiter (expansion), the south node (karma), the asteroid Ceres (nurturing, goddess), and Saturn, ruled by Capricorn and Pluto (lord of the underworld). Quite a company and they will have a great influence over us the upcoming weeks, both on a personal and a global plane.

The sign of Capricorn comes with a lot of respect. It is the third of the earth signs and it rules the 10th astrological house, the house of government, politics, and official business, also what we aim to achieve on a personal level. Capricorn is not really about having fun, but people born in that sign can have a good sense of humour, specially about the “darker” things in life.

Emergency Calls

With this aspects during the holidays it can be hard to relax, specially if you have a demanding job. Things will have a tendency to happen and you may need to respond to more emergency calls than usual. Unfortunately many placements in Capricorn tells us that we may need to be more alert and careful than usual when travelling, going on the road or doing everyday things.

On the other hand, Capricorn ruled by Saturn is the expert on protection, banishing, stability, and safety. With this Capricorn energy so close to us, we can call it in, draw it closer, and ask it to work for us for the highest good of all.

It’s a perfect time for recharging the wards around your house, making protection teas and potions, and all kinds of magickal things related to protection and stability. Around the 27th of December this is extra strong when the sun and Jupiter are joined together in Capricorn. This is also good for work regarding success and achievements.

Manifestation and Grounding

Both Capricorn and Saturn, the ruler of the sign, can assist us in manifestation. They can also help our dreams and ideas come to reality, help them to touch ground and become alive. You can use this energy to shape and form your “creative babies.” Saturn brings many gifts, it is the kind of success that comes from hard work and determination. Not giving up, working and crafting your talents towards success. Once again is around the 27th, a good time for working on your long term goals.

Other People’s Secrets

Mars is in the sign of Scorpio (secrets, sex, transformation) and is making a good aspect (trine) to Lilith Black Moon in Pisces. That means secrets and things hidden may be revealed to you. As always with Lilith Black Moon involved you may need to be careful. Even if you get the information, it does not mean you get the whole picture or the complexity of the situation. So whatever is revealed to you, think carefully before exposing it to others.

This is a very good aspect if you are a detective, investigator, or in other ways searching for the truth. If you are a magickal person and get your hands on some old knowledge or material, take your time and do your research before putting it to practice! If you are “too young and full of life” you may get yourself into serious trouble, and we wouldn’t want that. With that said, it is also good to keep your younger family members under extra close watch.

A Good Day for Rainbows

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun’s center, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon. This happens on Thursday the 26th or Friday the 27th, depending on where in the world you live.

It is said that a lunar eclipse is a change for the people, and a solar eclipse is a change for the leaders of the world. At the same time we have a new moon (new beginnings) and Jupiter (expansion, higher awareness) conjunct the sun in Capricorn (leadership, government ) and the south node (the past, karma) close by.

No matter what tradition or religion you come from, this is a window of opportunity to help manifest good things for the planet and everybody living on it. Light a candle, have a meditation circle, do a ceremony or just carry that good energy within you heart, send out what you wish for this planet now and in the future.

One of my Shamanic Alven teachers told me that everybody has a special color in their hearts, and that unique and special color is important for the rainbows of enlightenment being created in this time. Or to quote Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter:

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light.”

Healing Ceremony and Connecting to Earth Light

The opposite sign of Capricorn is Cancer, the first of the water signs. Now, with so many placements in Capricorn, the water energy of Cancer can help us to find balance and keep our hearts open through these tough times of transformation. Capricorn is connected to the earth and crystals. In this ceremony we will work with both water and crystals.

If you want to you can also add a flower essence. I like to use Red Clover, Hyacinth, and Lavender flower essences when working with global healing and group mind. Red Clover calms and helps you not panic when feeling some of the collective fears and anxieties. Lavender assists in digesting the information and healing that you are receiving. Hyacinth helps with group communication and is great when you feel out of touch with your soul “tribe”. The combination is excellent for sensitive awakened children and empaths. You can work with any flower essence that feels right for you.

Center yourself, cleanse yourself, the space, and the things that you will use.
Pour water into a glass or your chalice. Add the flower essence if you use any. Connect to the “Spirit of Water” and the understanding that we are all water babies, spending our first time in life in water in our mother’s womb. Feel how this connects all the people on the planet and how you are part of that connection. When you do this you can hold the chalice at you navel chakra.

Pick a stone or a crystal that represents what you wish for yourself and the planet right now and into the future. Here are some suggestions:

  • Amethyst – healing and transformation
  • Rose Quartz – love and healing
  • Onyx – protection and stability
  • Blue Lace Agate – peace and understanding
  • Citrine – joy and knowledge
  • Garnet – action and wisdom
  • Green Aventurine – healing of the past and hope for the future
  • Quartz – can be used for all wishes

Place the stone or crystal in the chalice and think of your wish. Hold the chalice at you heart filling the cup with heart energy and the colors of your heart. Meditate for as long as you want and feel comfortable with.

When ready take a sip of the water, allowing the healing energies into your body.

Raise your chalice to the sky, somewhere between your third eye and crown chakra. See and feel how universal rainbow energies of good prayers enter your chalice. Feel the connection between yourself and other good warriors of the heart. Connect to your “tribe.”

Offer your prayer and healing to others whom might need it and let it flow out around the planet and into the universe.

Now slowly lower your chalice once again to your heart and take another sip of the water. Allow the energies to blend and the healing to take place.

Lower your chalice down to your feet and pour the remaining water onto the ground. (If you are doing this indoors, you can have a large cauldron and pour the water into that, and later when finished onto the ground outside.)

Visualize and feel how the healing energies travels down into the heart of the planet and a giant crystal. See how the crystal becomes activated and starts to glow with earth light. Feel the connection between yourself and the earth light. Allow it to move upwards into your feet, further into your navel or womb and into your heart. Breath for a few minutes and let the light and colors fill your aura.

Give your thanks to the Spirits that have attended and say your farewells. Ground yourself, as needed.

I wish you a wonderful Holiday or as we say in Sweden “God Jul!”
