Define Wrong

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

I often get asked, specifically as a Witchcraft teacher, if I think someone or something is “wrong,” or the opposite, if someone or something is “right”?

Sometimes the question is about technique. “Do you thinking casting a circle starting in the south is wrong? It felt right. Do you think placing water in the east is wrong? I’m on the east coast. Do you think substituting almond for hazel is wrong? It’s what I had.”

Sometimes the concern is more religious. “Do you think it’s wrong to view the Roman and Greek gods as the same? They seem almost the same. Do you think it’s wrong to eat my food without blessing it? I don’t want to be weird when I’m with my family. Do you think it’s wrong to only call upon the Goddess in ritual, no God? I really love the Goddess, but don’t want the God.”

And still other times, it’s more moral. “Do you think it’s wrong to curse my ex-husband? He really deserves it. Do you think it is wrong to cast a spell for my daughter? She wouldn’t want me to, but it’s my way of helping. Do you think it’s wrong to banish my co-worker? She took my promotion.”

And each time, I ask, more or less, for the questioner to “define wrong.”

Likewise, I’ve been involved recently in a number of “Witchcraft is/isn’t a religion” debates in which my own starting point is often “define religion.” While I have embraced Witchcraft as a religion as I might see Hinduism, Buddhism, or Native American indigenous traditions as religions to be protected by law, they are really ways of life with deep philosophical underpinnings to guide that way. They are keepers of the sacred and the relationships between the human world and beyond. Yet in their mainstream forms, they are embraced by their community in ways that ancient Paganism might have been, but that Witchcraft today perhaps isn’t. Some people considered even the ancient forms of Craft an illicit religion. Yet here I am keeping the sacred and modeling a way of life through a Witchcraft temple.

My definition of religion contains the requirement that it uses ritual and trance technology for direct experience, guided by myth and art, but not commandments or divine proclamation. I’m deeply wary of religious leaders of any stripe—but especially Witches and to a lesser extent Pagans, Druids, and Asatru—issuing proclamations, commandments, or moral directives. The point of the practice is to seek your own experience and come to your own conclusions. Be guided by tradition, philosophy, and common sense, but don’t be bound by another’s opinion of them.

Don’t expect anyone to give you the answers whole, for their answers are not your answers. I am equally wary of the lazy student, the lazy practitioner, who expects to receive it all from a single source. Witchcraft is too messy for that. A teacher or tradition passes a thread, but you need to pull that thread. You need to see where it leads, and ultimately you need to weave your own garments from what you find. For a time, you will be threadbare and weave rags, but you’ll weave and reweave again and again. We might wear complimentary outfits and walk together, but we each have our own style and our own path.

For issues of technique, the question to ask is, “did it really work?” Then it was right. Did it fail? Then it was wrong. There is a quote attributed to both Aleister Crowley and Serge Kahili King: “Effectiveness is the measure of truth.”

For issues of theology, we have a religion that encourages direct access for our personal answers—meditate, journey, divine, or engage in community where there is invocation and ask them yourself. Realize your answer is for you and not a mandate to all. Check in with elders to make sure you are making sense, but a good elder won’t tell you your own truth, but will instead let you experience it.

For issues of morals, be guided by philosophy, empathy, and common sense. If the roles were reversed, would you think it wrong? Do your virtues support you? I’ve often found if the choice is between something easy and something hard, hard is often, but not always, the virtue.

As a religious “leader,” (a term I hate, preferring teacher or priest), I want to support people in finding their own answers. We can find ourselves emulating the practice of mainstream religions, pushing specific actions beyond those agreements of civil society. Your High Priest/ess shouldn’t tell you how to do things at home, define your personal relationship with the gods, or tell you who to vote for, but should show you tools to find those things for yourself. If you are rooted in Witchcraft traditions, you’ll be informed by those traditions and virtues, but we will each express them in different ways and with different intensities. You have to decide what is right and wrong in your own magick, practice, and life. Your deep wisdom and your gut will guide you, and a mentor or teacher can pose challenging questions to help you figure out when you are fooling yourself. But in the end, you have to find that internal compass and figure out your answer for yourself.

Spells for a Better World: Cord Spell for Equality

We at the Temple of Witchcraft have been looking for ways to do outreach so our distant members can feel more connected to the greater work of the Temple. The Pisces ministry presents a full moon circle here at the Temple’s home in Salem, New Hampshire, every month. This year our focus for those moon circles is spell-work. We were inspired to produce some spells for the Temple full moons and to make them available to all our initiates and friends to join us. Each of spell has the intention of creating a better world for us all. You may feel free to join us as is appropriate for your own circumstances. You might join us for all of them or just a few. We hope you will take us up on this opportunity to join in on the Great Work.

Since we are doing spells, each one may require you to get supplies ready to cast the spell with us. All the necessary supplies for the next month are listed in the postscript of the month before to give you time to acquire them. We have attempted to make them as simple, but still effective, as possible to make these available to the most people.

We will also be working with the thirteen goals of the witch in person and in our journals throughout the lunar month. We will provide some journal prompts for you if you want to join in.

Register here to join us in person in Salem, NH!

Gemini Full Moon

Goal of the witch: To learn

  • Ponder your life, what are the lessons being offered to you at this time?
  • What is calling you to learn more?
  • What do you need more practice to learn more fully?
  • Where are there gaps in your knowledge and wisdom? Can you fill these gaps?

Cord Spell for Equality and Compassion for People of All Genders

Our understanding of the breadth and depth of the spectrum of gender continues to grow, often struggling against the ingrained notion of binary, fixed gender. As we look to move past these restrictive notions into a broader, freer expression we cast this spell to aid us all in being compassionate, open, and loving to all genders: feminine, masculine, nonbinary, agender, genderqueer, transgender, and cisgender, all genders and none. In this spell we use the colors of the trans pride flag to work magic to bring about a more compassionate, understanding, and equal world. Braid a pink, blue, and white cord or ribbon to a length where you can tie nine knots in it.

Visualize the way that we interact, think, and talk about gender changing to one that is filled with more compassion and understanding. Say a line of this charm and tie a knot in the cord with each line.

“By knot of one, acceptance begun
By knot of two, we are open to the new
By knot of three, we set our selves free
By knot of four, our hearts open the door
By knot of five, compassion is alive
By knot of six, what we can we fix
By knot of seven, consideration is given
By knot of eight, we banish hate
By knot of nine, a better world is yours and mine!”

When the cord is tied you can bury it to ground the magic into being, burn it, or discard it in a sacred way. Once the knots are done the magic has begun. To ground this magic into being you can work toward gender education, or make a donation toward a charity that helps transgender people or works towards gender equality.

Postscript: This is the last of the spells for a better world blog. It is my sincerest hope that you have gotten inspiration or joy from these blogs and their spells. Thanks for reading these. If you liked any of these blogs, please feel free to make a donation to the Temple of Witchcraft, if you feel so moved.

Blessed be,

Temple Astrolog: Here we go again!

If you are tired of digging in the past, working through old relationship drama and facing the shadow side of yourself, I’ve got bad news for you, because here we go again! But it is not as bad as it might first seem. If you are doing a big clearing in your life, why not do it properly, right?

We’ve got Jupiter (expansion) at 29 degrees in Sagittarius, close to the asteroid Ceres (nurturing), Venus (relationships), and the south node (past, karma) all in the sign of Capricorn. They make a challenging square to the asteroid Juno (relationships) in Libra. No matter who we are, now is the time to take a deep look at the past, release what is not good, and steer towards a brighter future.

Beginnings and Endings

Juno is about relationships, but it is also about beginnings and endings. If you look at your life, you will probably see that many of your big life changes are related to people in some way. Meeting them, and perhaps also leaving a person, place, or situation. We may not always see it when we are right in the middle of it, but after some time passes, we can see the impact of the event. Then looking from a deeper or higher perspective, the person or relationship also becomes something else, like a gatekeeper opening or closing a chapter in life.

Seen through this perspective you, too, may work as a gatekeeper for others. Meeting you has the capacity to open doors, change lives, and make a difference in some way. Leaving you, or not staying so close anymore, may also take on a new meaning.

If we embrace this way of thinking then every meeting and relationship becomes important. For the time being, we share the road of life with fellow travelers. We assist each other in opening and closing the different gates of life. We do not know how long we will be together in this particular reality, and that makes both life and people precious.

Right now Juno in Libra with these aspects is challenging us to look at the gates lie before us: Is there something that you need to let go of right now? Why is it important? Why do you need to make that change?

In the square to the south node in Capricorn (past time) there are also important questions like: What doors in the past have you needed to close? Why did you need to do the change then? And finally, can you see a connection between these two? Is there a theme repeating itself right now?

Juno will continue to work on our deep connections and relationships for a while, because as she moves forward she will meet up with none other than Pluto (the underworld and transformation).

Difficulties to recharge and a hard time for romance

With Venus and Ceres together in Capricorn it is difficult to recharge your energy. Everyone is a bit low and many are hungry for energy on all levels. In times like this, my best advice is to keep up doing your regular exercises and meditations. Specially on those days when you want to skip it. That is probably the day when you need it the most.

Romance is not easy with this combination, either. It always seems to come between something. The laundry, work, kids, and the also the feeling of not being in the mood. The same advice applies here, don’t miss out on date nights, even if it means eating quietly together just trying to catch your breath. It is always challenging when it feels like there is not enough energy going round. But being together in the mist of it all, makes it possible for your hearts and energies to reconnect.

Ceres and Venus will leave each other’s company around the 10th of December.

Great ideas

Right now the Sun (illumination) is passing right next to the asteroid Pallas Athena in the sign of Sagittarius. This means great ideas can come as quickly as Zeus’s (Jupiter, ruling the sign of Sagittarius) lightning bolts! So keep your notebook close to you at all times and be ready for higher and sudden inspirations. You need to stay alert and ready, as all who want to catch a light from heaven have to do.

This transit ends around December 15th.

Blessings!

Who Has the Power?

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

In many ways, I find it funny to be considered an “elder” of a tradition, not only because of my age, but also because the more I practice, the more I realize how much I don’t know and look to go deeper. However, through the frame of reference that comes from many years of serious practice within a community, you get to observe trends and changes in thought within that community. One of the most interesting has been the shift in thinking about our relationship to power and magick. I have noticed a few dominant modes of thought.

Secret Science: Magick is the secret science of nature, and if you know how to apply the technology of magick correctly, you will have success. Practice basic skills to build up proficiency and apply the science creativity but understand that underlying it all is a magickal logic that works for everyone if they have the eyes to see it. Witches, magicians, and healers understand this secret science either intuitively or directly through a tradition, which allows them to make their workings more effective. Natural correspondences—like stones, herbs, and metals—help with the process, but it’s through the proper application of these things that success is found.

Witch Power: The power is within you, and within a select and secret few who really can do magick. Some might have occasional successes, but if they don’t have the inner fire, they won’t truly be magickal beings. Objects and correspondences can help focus, but you don’t really need anything except the power within.

Objects: The power of the magick is in choosing the necessary ingredients and symbols and following them in accordance with tradition. Not just anything will do, and it’s difficult to make up new and successful spells without a basis in tradition, so when possible, follow paths already established. Power can be passed by objects like talismans or charms, which will work just as well for those not initiated in the arts.

Supplication: Magickal power comes through the worship of the old gods, either as a byproduct of the worship or as prayer. Ask your personal deities for their aid and support, and like good parents, they will care for you. Some with less fidelity to their gods look at them as “vending machines”: you match your intention to the correct god, and you get what you want. This is offensive to the traditionalist.

Spirit Helpers: Allies come to your aid if you ask nicely or make offerings. Spirits—be they ancestors, angels, or other entities—have the ability to make things happen. Magick is communication, so communicate with them. Bargain. Make deals. Then things will happen for you.

In these various views, you can see some themes and aesthetics—classic occultist, more traditional Witch, religionist, animist. At various times and places, one paradigm takes dominance. You can see themes of power within, power over, and power through. If you have had a long-enough practice, you can probably see a little of yourself in each at some point, and more than a little truth in each, while knowing none embody the full truth.

When seeking to make something happen, ask yourself what your relationship is to the power needed to bring about that change. Is it from one source? Is it a mix? How do you engage with it? What is your paradigm and alignment, and is it really working for you? Can you explore other paradigms and see what works best when? Are you an immediate, forceful, make-things-happen-now spell-caster, as is found in a lot of folk magick popular today where workings are reinforced? Or are you a one-and-done, release-and-forget spell-caster, often working towards the long term?

I’m a secret science Witch at heart, but believe disciplined practice kindles an inner power to engage with the universe. My gods and spirits are part of the patterns found in the secret science, as are the traditional correspondences. For me, my relationship to magickal power is through trance, and the spell has to engage my magickal mindset to enter trance. That effectively engages all aspects for me.

What is your relationship to power? Does it come from within? Outside? Generated? Bargained? Discovered? Knowing how, where, and why it comes can help you apply it more successfully for your own greater good.

Temple Astrolog: Astrology of the Moon, Love and Family

How come sometimes we can feel like we have laid our hearts wide open for someone and the message is just not getting through? And why is it in some relationships we do our very best to understand each other’s emotional language but we can’t? Let’s see if the language of astrology can help us to decode the emotional language of the people we love the most and hold close to our hearts.

I’ve been working with astrology, families, and relationships for many years, and no matter how complicated things may look, a lot can be understood by understanding the moon. First of all, the moon is personal. We can hold other planets away from us, but the moon has a tendency to walk right through everything and into our system. To be very direct I would say that If you can’t have a relationship with your friend or partner’s moon, then you will never be close. The moon is about trust at the deepest level.

The reason for this is that the moon is connected the time you spent in your mother’s womb, what you needed to feel safe and secure, and this instinctual need follows you through your life. No matter how much you evolve, your moon will show how you instinctively give love and what you need from others to feel emotionally secure.

If you don’t know your moon sign, there are plenty of online resources, such as astro.com, for finding out based on your birthdate, time, and location. Now let’s look at the different astrological signs.

Moon in fiery signs: Aries, Leo, Saggitarius – has a need to feel special and unique. To be the one and only, one of a kind, to be first and to receive special treatment. They show you they love you by doing something special, just for you.

Moon in earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn – feel secure by being practical, planning and doing things. Anything from baking a cake to having the right kind of sweater can make them feel safe. They show you they love you by cooking for you, fixing your car, paying your bills and filling up the refrigerator.

Moon in air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius – feel secure by people listening to them, talking about different scenarios about what might or might not happen. They show you they love you by saying it to you in many different ways, from love notes to whispers in the ear. They call you and text you.

Moon in water signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces – they feel secure by kissing, hugging, and touching and this is also how they show their love for you.

David and his supercool dad Mike

David is six years old his moon is in earthly Taurus and he is starting school. David is quite nervous about this and has planned a lot before the start of school, something that his dad Mike has picked up on. Mike’s moon is in the sign of fiery Leo.

Mike is worried the other kids will pick on David because he is a bit shy, so they go shopping together. The coolest shoes, clothes, and schoolbag. Mike believes that if David looks really cool (and unique, a fiery thing) everything will be alright.

But David is not worried about that. He doesn’t want to be cool and have the other kids looking at him. He worries more about being late in the morning, not knowing what to do, and that his dad is going to act all cool and make the other moms stare and flirt with him. Perhaps even his teacher—that is so embarrassing! David wants pens, and pencils and an extra-large schedule to put up on the refrigerator so his dad doesn’t forget anything important.

Simon and how superhero shoes became an old hat

Simon is 10 years old and he has the opposite problem. He has the moon in Aries and he would love to have a Mike as a parent (well, not really, just right now). His mother Irma has her moon in Capricorn. Simon has really, really tried to tell his mom that he needs that special pair of running shoes. That they would make him run like a superhero and everyone would see that. Somehow that discussion ended with Simon inheriting (earth and Capricorn) his older brother’s hat, and it is supposed to make him feel safe and protected in the school yard. On top of things, the hat is home-knitted by his mother with a lot of love and protection, she says. Simon does not doubt that, it just not the right “bling”- thing for him.

Anna and a cold car

Anna has her moon in Taurus. She has been married to Jennie for over seven years and now she is convinced that Jennie doesn’t love her anymore. Jennie has her moon in Gemini. Anna has waited for things to change and now she can’t hold it back anymore, so she tells it all to Jennie. That she is convinced that she does not love her anymore and that she suspects that Jennie has found someone else.

Jennie seems really confused and does not seem to know what Anna is talking about. Don’t I tell you (air) every morning that I love you? she asks. Yes you do, Anna answers.

Don’t I text (air) you every day and call you on my way back from home? Yes, you do.

So, then what in heaven’s name is it? How can you believe that I don’t love you anymore?

The cold car, Anna answers. Every day for years you have always warmed up the car for me in the mornings. And made the windows free from ice. And now for the last months you haven’t. So I was sure that you didn’t love me anymore. (earth)

Jennie gives her a big kiss. You silly woman! The reason for that is that they are reconstructing the road to work. I don’t have as much time in the mornings. If I’d known how much it means to you, I would have gotten up earlier!

A happy birthday with a sad sister

Margo has her moon in watery Pisces. She is very creative and work as a well-known makeup artist. She decides to give her sister Elsa something special as a birthday gift: a back stage pass to her favorite rock band. Elsa has her moon in Saggitarius and loves adventures, so this should be a great evening.

Elsa is happy for her birthday gift and the evening has a great start. At the concert they spontaneously meet a few of Elsa’s friends from work. When they find out that Margo and Elsa got backstage passes, they ask I they can come along and Margo says, yes, of course they can! Margo feels like the coolest sister ever, very happy that she can invite Elsa’s friends as well.

At the party after the concert Margo can see that Elsa is not having fun. She’s not herself and the evening does not lift off at all. Now Margo is disappointed and feel misunderstood. What is wrong she asks Elsa. Did you not like meeting you favorite band? Well, so did my co-workers, answers Margo. I thought this was going to be a special (fire) evening for just you and me. Now everyone else at work has done the same thing. I’d rather do something ese, just you and me to celebrate my special (fire) evening and birthday.

It’s not about right or wrong

How you reacted to the stories above could be very different. Shouldn’t David be happy about his dad buying him new stuff? And shouldn’t Simon appreciate the knitted hat? And how could Anna read so much into a cold car? And isn’t Elsa being behaving like a spoiled kid?

Perhaps, and perhaps not. Because it is not about right or wrong. It is about what we need to feel safe and loved. How we instinctively show our love, and how we believe that the way we do it, is how others need it. By knowing what our partner, child, siblings, and friends need to feel secure and safe we find a way into their hearts and into more balanced relationships. With this “moon key” we may very well find that our loved ones show us so much more love and appreciation than we knew. We just did not have the key to see it! There are many ways to say “I love you.”

Blessings!

The Voice of Wisdom

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

It looks like a fork in the road. On one side is the path of knowledge. On the other side is the path of wisdom. What is the difference, and which should we choose?

We live in an age of knowledge. Information surrounds us, and we are its constant mouthpiece, not only shouting facts but also opinions. The voice of knowledge speaks incessantly—it pauses for listening in order to agree or rebut, rarely to contemplate.

Contemplation, however, leads to wisdom. Contemplation comes with silence, stillness, and reflection, which allows us to say, “I don’t know” and even “I don’t care.” Wisdom seems to require a lot more of us than knowledge, for while knowledge asks us to be right, wisdom asks us to be correct. Satisfaction is not guaranteed on this path, for it involves discipline and soft skills that are hard to learn.

In reality, the choice isn’t one or the other. The path of wisdom automatically comes with knowledge, but the path of knowledge alone does not come with wisdom. The path of wisdom usually bestows heart as well, for although knowledge alone might be passionate, that passion is infused more with anger than love. Wisdom helps us know how, when, where, and why to use the knowledge we have to be our most effective, while knowledge at its best wants to “know” but at its worst insists on “being right.”

Knowledge is of the mind, but wisdom flows from the illuminated mind, lit by love and will. Knowledge can be abused, but wisdom cannot. Knowledge can lead to both wonderful and terrible things being created. Wisdom asks us to ask why, and to understand that just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.

Wisdom is not always fancy or pretty. It can be brutal and gut wrenching when hard won. Wisdom might not always be “right,” but it is true, as many truths are conveyed in myth and story. Sometimes the truest things never really happened.

While knowledge is a requirement on the path, understanding and wisdom are goals of the adept. Beware those versed only in opinion or cold fact. Beware manipulation by opinions and facts alone. Look for the context of wisdom. Distinguish between the two. Much of what is being said, written, and taught, within and outside of the occult world, is written by the voice of knowledge. Wisdom brings experience, which allows for the digestion and integration of those experiences.

Teach yourself to listen to the voice of wisdom. Strive to speak with the voice of wisdom. Absorb facts and form opinions, but express them from a mind illuminated by love and will.

Temple Astrolog: Recharging with the Moon

We all need to recharge our energy from time to time, especially when life is hectic and we experience a lot of stress. But what happens when our partner’s way to recharge is different from our own? How can we make the differences into an asset instead of something that tears at the relationship? And what about those times when a person in your family or close to you is going through a tough time, but whatever you try to do to help, they just seem to push you further away? Lets take a look at the moon and see what clues we can find there.

First of all, everything with the moon has to do with instinct and our instinctual behaviors and needs. From our time in our mother’s womb, we needed to feel secure and safe. No matter how much we evolve and work on ourselves, that instinct is going to be there. We learn a lot from understanding it, and we can be aware when our moon is activated but we cannot suddenly change our “coding” just because we or someone else wants us to. We just have to deal with it and become friends with it.

If you don’t know your moon sign, there are plenty of online resources, such as astro.com, for finding out based on your birthdate, time, and location.

There are many layers and ways to work with the moon both in astrology and magick, but lets begin by looking at some basics when it comes to recharging our energy system and emotional health.

  • The moon in Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Saggitarius)
  • The moon in Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

They are extroverts in their moon energy. If you upset them, they will tell you so. If you park your car blocking their path they may yell at you. Usually you don’t have to guess what’s going on and it blows over rather quickly.

The extrovert or outgoing moon signs recharge by meeting other people, going out, getting fresh air and a fresh perspective. If stressed out they can feel trapped, locked in and like they can not breathe.

  • The moon in Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
  • The moon in Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

They are introverts in their moon energy. If you upset them, they withdraw and go within. It may take a while before you understand what’s going on, and it will probably take some time before they get over it.

The introvert moon signs recharge their energy by staying home, eating, sleeping, and spending time alone or with family. If stressed out they can become very drained in their energy, grumpy and sad. They often need “alone time” before they can meet people again.

Sara, Sven and the mountain bike

When Sara and Sven met, sparkles were in the air. Sara has her moon in fiery Saggitarius and she works a travel agent. She met Sven at work when she was arranging an event that needed a chef. And there he was, Sven. Warm and friendly with a big heart and a king in the kitchen. Sara is the adventurous type and she loves her mountain bike and hiking in the mountains.

When they first met, Sara was telling her friends that it was like coming home. She could finally relax at home and enjoying late evenings together, eating good food and being at peace. Sven was very happy, too. He told his friends that Sara brought out the adventurer and daredevil inside of him and that he met a lot of new friends and saw many new places.

But lately there has been trouble in paradise. Sara has a lot of stress at work and Sven is doing many extra hours at work as well. They are both very tired at the end of the week. Sara’s reaction to this is to want to mountain bike more and blow off steam. When she comes home, it feels like she can not breathe and if Sven has cooked dinner it’s even worse. She feels trapped and works later and later.

Sven feels like Sara is avoiding him. Every time he has made extra effort to reconnect over homemade dinner she disappears on her mountain bike. He is beginning to hate the bike. He’s too tired to hang out with the whole mountain bike team in the weekends.

So what can they do? Sara’s need for activity and meeting up with new energy is not going to change (moon in Sagittarius) and Sven’s need for peace and privacy (moon in Cancer) is not going to change either. But what if they can give each other space to recharge in their own way and also find a way to combine their needs? What if Sven and Sara eat dinner up on the roof-deck instead from time to time? Have space to look at the stars and plan for the future. And what if they can cook together with a smaller group of friends when hiking? Or just the two of them sometimes.

Emma and Magnus, baby happiness and the worst present ever

Emma has her moon in Gemini (air) and Magnus in Aries (fire). They have just become parents for the first time. Lovely baby Danielle is 4 months old and has her moon in Virgo. She has had problems with her tummy (virgo rules that area) and routines are important for her. The baby is also very close to her mom and it’s not so easy for Magnus to assist and help at the moment, something that he has told his mother Agneta. Now Agneta has her moon in Taurus and she is a very resourceful woman who has raised four kids more or less on her own. She is a bit “old school” and believes raising children is not the men’s best function in society. Agneta decides to help a bit and make plans with Magnus.

Suddenly an early Saturday morning Emma gets a real surprise when she opens the door. On the doorstep is her mother and father-in-law with lots of bags with everything from food to baby clothes. Mother-in-law Agneta rushes into the house and declares that they will have a wonderful weekend with lots of together time, making food and cleaning the house. Just staying home and being with the baby.

Agneta says that Emma does not have to worry about dressing up or going out. Just rest and relax. Then she says that the men got tickets to go out and see a game. That’s just to much for Emma, and she starts crying. Magnus get stressed out and starts yelling, which upsets the baby and Agneta the Mother in Law looks like she’s having a panic attack because of all the turbulence and chaos.

Now, what went wrong?

Emma with her moon in Gemini wants to go out with her family and her baby. To see other people and get fresh air. Best way to help them could be by just being an extra set of hands while eating outside in a restaurant. She wants to dress up a bit, and as a Gemini (air) to have an opportunity to talk with her husband. Staying home more is not recharging her moon. Being able to do things with her family and her partner is. Bringing things to the home without asking is not the best way either. Shopping together out on the town is. If we see the moon as a way of processing emotions and digesting them you could say it like this:

  • Extrovert moons need to digest things out there before bringing them inside.
  • Introvert moons need to digest things inside before bringing them out there.

This moon energy constitution is extra-sensitive during periods of stress when recharging is essential. A partner with an extrovert moon may need to run after work or go to the gym so that he or she can have a relaxing evening. A partner with a introvert moon may need to take a long bath and not talk to anyone before being able to socialise in the evening.

If we understand this about ourselves and our loved ones a lot of misunderstandings can be avoided and we can meet up energized and recharged with more energy and love to share.

Blessings.

Spells for a Better World: Poppet to End Hunger

Goal of the witch: Breathe and eat correctly

  • Have you been breathing consciously?
  • When you breathe you take in not only in oxygen, but energy. What kind of energy are you breathing in?
  • Have you taken a breathing break in nature lately to fill your energetic self
  • How do you feel when you eat the correct foods and amounts for your body
  • How conscious are you when you eat? Are you distracted or focused on the blessing of the food?
  • Do you bless your food before eating it?
  • In your own words, what are the benefits of eating and breathing mindfully?

Paper poppet spell to end hunger

For this spell to end hunger, you will need a piece of paper, a pen, and some scissors. You will also need a burning pot for this spell, a fireproof container to burn paper in.

Fold your paper back and forth like a fan in equal fourths. With your pen, mark out a rough outline of a person or doll on one of the outer fourths. The hands and legs should connect to the edges of the paper. Cut out your person with the paper still folded. Discard and recycle the rest of the paper. Unfold the paper to see the paper dolls you have made.

First, imagine and charge these dolls to represent the hungry people who need food in our world. On each doll write an affirmation or phrase about their needs being met. Like:

There is plenty of food for us to share.
Everyone gets what they need.
The universe provides for all.
A way is found for all to have food.

You can also get artistic and depict your paper poppets having food in their bellies or hands. Hold your poppets and charge them that they are no longer hungry and have all that they need. Place the poppets in the fire-safe burning dish or cauldron saying this chant and ignite.

This vision brought to form
Released through the fire
In manifest you reform
Fulfilling hunger’s desire

After you are done, bury the cool ashes. Make a donation to your local food pantry or soup kitchen to ground the magic.

Postscript: For next month’s spell you will need some pink, blue, and white string or cord.

Temple Astrolog: A Passionate Samhain and a Mystery Search

Now is a wonderful time to dive deep into the mysteries. The Asteroid Pallas Athene is at 22 degrees in Scorpio (mysteries) together with Mercurius (communication and learning) at 22 degrees in the same sign. Not too far away at 15 degrees we also find Venus. This is a beautiful combination for going both very deep (Scorpio) and very high (Pallas Athene). If you like working with herbs and plants, you can find new and very exciting combinations. Just be careful, not playing around too much and getting into trouble as one easily can get when dealing with Scorpio!

Scorpio – not the easy one

People born in the sign of Scorpio can be blamed for many things. Being “easy” and shallow is not one of them. They are somewhat complicated, and many would suggest it is one of the things that makes them so interesting to hang out with.

You can never be one hundred percent sure of what is going on inside of their heads. In their hearts, it is another thing. Most Scorpios are totally loyal to those they hold close to their hearts. If you are friends, you are friends for life, unless you betray them, then they will despise you with equal passion and determination. The Sun moves into the sign of Scorpio around the 24th of October.

Scorpio children and defense mechanisms

Secrets are important to a Scorpio and if you are a parent to a Scorpio child please respect that. A secret told can hurt a Scorpio child deeply and be very difficult to recover from, even in adult life. A Scorpio child needs to have their secrets and know that others can be trusted to keep them safe. The secret can be anything from the true name of one’s teddy bear to their most inner feelings. The “poisonous” side of Scorpio that can be a mean “truth sayer” is really a part of the sign’s defense mechanism. A balanced and wise Scorpio reveals truths with perfect timing as a way of opening the gates to go deeper into the mysteries of life.

Love and Passion soft and deep

Scorpio is the second water sign. Cancer wants to be your friend and a part of your family. Scorpio wants to merge with you on a soul level. This makes them intense and passionate lovers. If you meet water in a respectful way, you will be able to go deep without hurting yourself. If you hit the surface hard, you will get bruised and hurt yourself. This is a good reminder when meeting the energy of Scorpio. One of my first shamanic teachers always told us to do ceremony “soft and deep” to be able to penetrate the built-up shields of resistance within ourselves and the people participating. I carry this advice in my heart, especially when working with the deeply transformative energies of Scorpio.

With Pallas Athene, Mercury, Venus, and soon the Sun all in the sign of Scorpio we can all learn more about the sexual and sensual energies in ourselves, our partner(s), and the Universe itself. It is a perfect time for passionate and sensual magick, meeting and merging on a soul level. And what is ceremony if not making love with the Universe?

Venus will be in Scorpio until the 2nd of November, Pallas Athene until the 8th of November, and the Sun until the 23rd (exact dates vary depending on where you live in the world).

Returning to wisdom teachings old and new

With this stellium of planets and asteroids in Scorpio we have the chance to go deeper and unlock some mysteries. This is a wonderful time to go to the library or your local metaphysical store and pick up or borrow some books.

Don’t hesitate to go over old materials again. We all learn and teach from our level of understanding at the moment. This means that as we grow wiser and return once again to the same material and teachings, new things unfold and old understandings take root.

Personally, I love going back to my old study books and look at what lines and passages I highlighted before. That gives me an understanding of what I found most interesting then. I also find that many times I highlight new things that did not catch my attention the last time I worked with the material.

“Some of the greatest mysteries are hidden in plain sight for those who have eyes to see.” And now we can all take on our Mystery glasses and go out on a personal mystery search.

Pluto: Unlocking the time barrier

Pluto, the ruler of Scorpio and also ruler of the underworld, may be quite helpful to us on our quest. Right now Venus, Mercury, and Pallas Athene are in a helpful aspect (sextile) to Pluto at 20 degrees Capricorn. As the ruler of the underworld, Pluto is well-connected to the ancestors, to say the least, and they can together help us to move beyond the time barrier. That may help us to access not just the mysteries in our current life and time, but also those of the past and future.

Clearing relationship karma

Juno (relationships) at 24 degrees in Virgo is also assisting with a sextile to Pallas Athene, Mercury, and Venus in Scorpio, and a helpful trine to Pluto. This may well help us to let go of old relationship drama that may have been going on for a very long time, even eons.

You can assist this process by listening carefully to your dreams. Take good care with your spiritual hygiene and use a lot of cleaning and clearing baths, herbs, and meditations.

Romantic and intense Samhain and Halloween

The aspects mentioned above are active during Samhain (at 15 degrees Scorpio). This can make it an intense and passionate celebration this year. With Juno’s aspects to Venus and Mercury, sex and romance are in the air. If you are doing ceremony, you have a really strong backup with the Asteroid of Vesta (the priestess) at 22 degrees in earthly Taurus anchoring Venus, Pallas Athene, and Mercury in Scorpio.

You may want to be aware though that the Sun at 7 degrees in Scorpio is at opposition to Uranus (rebellion, unexpected things) in Taurus. This can create unexpected results from ceremonies, including things like unexpected pregnancies!

Take care of yourself and your loved ones and remember to protect children and animals during the celebrations. They are very sensitive and cannot choose their environment and move away from harmful places and people like adults can.

I wish you a wonderful Samhain and Halloween celebration!

Blessings!

Beauty Triumphant in a World of Ugliness

by Christopher Penczak, edited by Tina Whittle

The world appears broken. Our experience of our society is illness. Injustice reigns, and the cosmic order is in disarray. We tell ourselves, as practitioners, what we have been telling ourselves for years—these are the last vestiges of the Age of Pisces. We are ushering in a new world. And perhaps we are right. But it doesn’t feel like that, and after working personally and in community and seeing no end in sight, no light of Aquarius at the end of the tunnel, it is easy to succumb to despair. It is in these moments that we need to use our tools the most, engage our magick, and look to our maps and mandalas to reorient ourselves amid the chaos.

One of my primary tools for understanding consciousness is the Tree of Life. As a practitioner, I have found the Qabalistic Tree of Life to be a powerful map for me. At first I was a reluctant user of it. I disliked the geometry, the memorization, the pattern. I wanted something more symmetrical. I wanted something more organic. Then, due to great mentorship, I stopped whining about what I wanted it to be and just studied it as it was presented. Studying something didn’t mean I had to be married to it, and with that freedom to choose at the forefront of my studies, I found myself married to it. I now have difficulty imagining my interface with magick at least not referencing it obliquely.

What helps me in the Tree of Life is a review of the little-used set of correspondences. When everyone else is most focused on god names, planets, and letters, I found the concepts of the vision, virtue, vice, obligation, and illusion most helpful. Each level on the Tree, each sphere or emanation of the divine known as a sephira, has five points of consciousness that can help you figure out where you are on your own personal inner Tree of Life. With it, you can have a map of obvious ways to move onward and can easily see where such choices will lead you. The symbols can also help you devise rituals and meditation, but when you’re stuck, their main benefit is providing a focus and showing you some clear options. While there are additional options not on the map, when you are lost, it is helpful to find the obvious roads that are sometimes not-so-obvious during times of confusion.

Some confuse their inner personal Tree of Life with the cosmic tree. They can confuse the daily challenges of life with cosmic initiation and enlightenment. The progression is not linear, and what seems like enlightenment today can seem quite juvenile tomorrow. We must realize that there is a tree within a tree within a tree, and it’s all relative. Comparing yourself to anyone else doesn’t matter, as they are not on your tree, and there is no way to truly know if your tree is “higher” or “lower” than anyone else’s. There is no way to prove you are better or worse, so stop trying. Instead, use the tree like a lens to understand yourself and those you are having difficulty with, including the world in general.

I feel despair when I look at the world and see so much selfishness and unrepentant greed. I also see so much dishonesty, and the two form the roots of destruction. While there can be more detailed critique, I feel society (at least American society, but also society in a larger sense) is challenged by unregulated greed and dishonesty.

It’s awful to witness, but witness we must, for that is the first function of consciousness, before any action. The act of witnessing with consciousness can change the outcome, a fundamental teaching of alchemy and magick, though I’m a big believer in following up everything with real-world action to make change. And when we witness, as trite as it sounds, I think we are at a threshold of personal and societal initiation. Quite simply, we must choose to do the work on both of those levels.

In the Tree of Life, the lower four spheres of the tree are divided from the upper by a veil, acting as a magickal buffer between those who have achieved a level of spiritual adepthood and those who are cycling though human stuff. Many seekers have peak experiences that touch the first sphere of adepthood, Tiphereth, but not everyone anchors themselves there. And even when you do, you still cycle through all the human challenges “below,” but you have a new perspective on it all, and you root your identity there instead.

The two spheres just below this new sense of self are called Netzach and Hod, or Victory and Splendor. They are fancy names for the consciousness of Venus and Mercury respectively, planets close to the Sun, which is the “planet” of Tiphereth, meaning Beauty or Harmony.

The vice of Hod, Mercury, is dishonesty and falsehood, while the vice of Netzach is selfishness. There we have the corruption before us, so close to harmony, but inverted from their true purpose. One who embodies the virtue of Hod embodies truthfulness. Truthfulness is found through dedicated learning, which means studying not just of facts, but also the “why” behind them. With that learning, the illusion that everything is in order is released. The spiritual vision of Hod is the Vision of Splendor. It’s an experience of understanding the splendor of things, their perfect order, just as they are, which is often imperfect and unordered. In my struggles with dishonesty in our society, I must also look at myself and realize I cannot force my sense of order upon it. I must witness the unfolding and act from a place of truth, realizing the differences between objective truth, my truth, and another’s truth.

The vice of Netzach, Venus, is selfishness, but also traditionally included in it is “impurity” and “unchastity.” Though these conjure images of Puritanical sexuality, that isn’t the deeper meaning here, which has little to do with pleasure and more to do with the programming we carry. It is the impurity of shame, when we feel we are not worthy, and undoing this programming requires the ability to determine whether something is truly harmful or whether we’ve been told so to control us. The combined illusion of selfish greed and impurity generates projections. Rather than own our actions, we project them onto others. Don’t we see that daily? The liar tells us everyone else is lying. The cheater accuses others of cheating. The violent seek to regulate the other side from being violent, even when they are not. There are common “tells,” behaviors or phrases that indicate when such a projected lie is coming. Therefore, the projection and falsehood, the vices of Venus and Mercury, go hand-in-hand. Projection allows us to believe the falsehood as truth, as our truth, even when it is really false. It’s how people can live with the lie and truly believe in their own virtue.

Netzach’s obligation is responsibility. We must be responsible for our own thoughts, words, and deeds. We must be aware and correct our projections. When climbing the Tree, we usually reach Hod first, followed by Netzach, so we must take responsibility for the previous spheres, including the falsehood of Hod and other vices such as idleness and inertia. When we do, we learn the virtue of unselfishness and can find the Vision of Beauty Triumphant. I had a teacher who described this vision as “love wins.” We often talk about love, the power of love, all we need is love, love is everything, but it is only love triumphant when we learn to find love through responsibility and truthfulness, through trust in the greater process, and a disciplined effort to our conscious practice, be it meditation, magick, and/or the reformation of our current society through just action and engagement.

Sentimental and soporific love never wins. It just makes us feel good for a moment. Beauty triumphant is seeing the beauty in every moment and loving the beauty in every moment. After that, we can follow the serpent’s path, the lightning strike to the beauty and harmony of a new level of consciousness. The path between Venus and the Sun is represented by the Death card in Tarot. We must die to the old self, an initiatory process, to be reborn. We must let go of the part of us that still uses greed, dishonesty, mistrust, and laziness as our baseline operating system. Likewise, if we follow the opposite route via Hod, we find ourselves on the path of the Devil card. We will be confronted by the gatekeeper, the guardian of the threshold, and challenged to release our imposed and accepting bindings to become free. When we take the middle path, we are walking the path of Temperance, of not only balance, but union and integration between the two.

Collectively as a society, in our politics, government, and social lives, we are all facing Death, the Devil, and Temperance, being challenged to go deeper, climb higher, and reach a new level of consciousness. It will happen in large and small ways, personally and professionally. Recently I experienced a surprising conflict with now-former students. Perplexed by their behavior, in many ways the issues mirrored the larger conflict of our nation and world regarding clear communication, community, and privilege. It was only after reviewing ten years of correspondence leading to the crisis that I could see the growing pattern. The key word was responsibility, or lack thereof. The behaviors were projections believed to be the truth, but it was obvious to a larger group less attached to the situation that they were projections. With that, I understood how the students’ actions could have come so far, yet still be inappropriate in that moment. They were at the challenge of Netzach, the challenge of the veil where one must transition their identity and let go. Other changes in their lives were certainly challenging identity, and this intensified in the magickal community. While it didn’t solve the problem, as their choices left nothing to solve, understanding the mechanism behind the scenario that led us to such a situation did help me gain greater comfort. While I was tempted to write a letter explaining it, a few wise mentors all emphasized that if they are not asking for communication, they were not in a place to hear it, and if anything should occur, they must be the ones to open that door. In illusion, it is easy to frame it however you’d like it to make yourself the hero. And I must be aware of that myself, as I obviously have my own biases in such situations.

When I apply this teaching to the world, I likewise gain a measure of understanding and sympathy, even though it doesn’t solve the world’s problems. Seeking order, which is an illusion we impose upon our reality the way we wish it to be, creates falsehood. Those embodying the virtue of Hod can only continue to speak truth to power and encourage others to do the same. Those justifying selfishness will have difficulty seeing it as selfishness, and will therefore project onto others to avoid responsibility, distracting themselves and (they think) distracting others. Those holding the virtue of Netzach can only take responsibility for what is within their power to change, embodying responsible love, beauty triumphant, in all that they do. We must be vigilant to apply truth and responsibility to all aspects of our lives—personally, professionally, and in the greater society—and not just call out others without taking our own inventory.

Let us all work together in aiding the natural triumph of beauty, in all things, as we walk the paths of death, freedom, and balance together, to start a new paradigm of harmony in the world.
