Description

John Winthrop the Younger was an avid chemist, practical scientist, and famous for starting one of the first ironworks in its initial location of Quincy, Massachusetts. He was popular for what was considered the more mystical concoctions coined “strange medicines” for his time. Though John was not formally a doctor he had the trust of the hundreds of patients for which he diagnosed and treated. He held offices as: Assistant, General Court, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1631-1649; Governor, Colony of Connecticut, 1657, 1659-1676; Deputy Governor, Colony of Connecticut, 1658. During his tenure as Governor of Connecticut, he oversaw the acceptance of Quakers who were banned from Massachusetts. He was also one of the commissioners of the United Colonies of New England in 1675 and secured a charter for Connecticut, which was the first “constitution” in the colonies. As governor, Winthrop used his reputation as a learned man to turn the colony from the place most likely to execute people for witchcraft to completely eliminating the practice years before the Salem Witch Trials.
